Description
"Sea Scorpion" FossilEurypterus remipes
Silurian
Fiddlers Green Formation
Herkimer County, New York, USA
This odd-looking type of fossil is commonly referred to as a "sea scorpion" for obvious reasons but is scientifically known as an Eurypterid. This representation of Eurypterus remipes out of New York is quite the 'sea monster' measuring nearly 7.5 inches (19 cm) from tip to tail. Dating to the Silurian of the Fiddlers Green Formation, the marine creature once patrolled the floor of the prehistoric ocean over 400 million years ago. This larger specimen displays a subtle brownish-gray coloration and an abundance of segments on the sculptural form. Prominent paddles are well-preserved, protruding out from both sides of the aquatic arthropod, and even a pair of remnant eye stalks are still visible. The fossil is preserved in a thick, solid, and heavy block of sedimentary rock with a consistent gray coloration overall but lots of layers over its undulating surface. Collectors know this unusual type of fossil and will recognize that this is a good one. Size and quality make this one collectible piece. This fossil appears to be in excellent condition, with a minimal amount of restorative stabilization.
Overall Measurements: 8.74 x 6.18 x 1.48 inches (22.20 x 15.70 x 3.77 cm)
