    Description

    Small Fossil Turtle
    Stylemys nebrascensis
    Oligocene
White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA

It may seem a bit counterintuitive, but smaller fossil turtles are actually much more rare than the larger ones. But these are actually not turtles at all, they are really a fossil tortoise. The distinction is fairly easy: turtles are aquatic, and tortoises are land-dwelling. This small tortoise is in exceptional condition as both carapace and plastron are very well preserved.

This small "pillar turtle" is a light tan color. The well mineralized shell exhibits minimal restoration, and the fossil has nice symmetry on both its top and bottom. This 4.5 inch (11.43 cm) chelonian has an appeal simply in terms of being "cute."
    Overall Measurements: 4.5 x 4.0 x 1.8 inches (11.4 x 10.2 x 4.5 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
