    Borealosuchus sp.
    Late Cretaceous
    Hell Creek Formation
    Garfield County, Montana, USA

This rare and nearly complete fossil Crocodile skull is a truly incredible specimen. Considered to be one of the best quality skulls of the genus known, this Borealosuchus skull from the Late Cretaceous was found in 2010. Similar in appearance to living Crocodiles, this specimen has occluded (closed) upper and lower jaws, but features excellent preservation of the teeth. Its long, narrow snout indicates a diet primarily of fish, but this creature, much like contemporary Crocodiles, would probably have eaten anything it could find and choke down. While it is not uncommon to find fossils of Borealosuchus in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana - given the abundance of this middle sized crocodilian - well preserved specimens such as this unique example are exceptionally rare. An inhabitant of the ponds and swamps of its day, it is no surprise that the climate Borealosuchus experienced was much like that of Florida today where modern Crocodiles (and not just Alligators) thrive in the wild. This particular skull has impressive teeth which are easily visible even with the upper and lower jaws locked. Like modern Crocodiles, Borealosuchus would have grown new teeth throughout its life. This specimen is an outstanding fossil with excellent preservation and minimal restoration. This is a superlative piece and as good as fossils of this variety come, with appeal for even the most discerning collector. Although the Hell Creek of the Late Cretaceous is most well-known for producing some of the world's finest Dinosaur fossils, this ancient variety of crocodilian did not go extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, but endured into the Eocene some 38 million years ago. Of course, modern Crocodiles still have their place of dominance in certain ecosystems. Over a foot long, this is one of the finest and most complete Crocodile skulls from the Maastrichtian Age.
    Overall Measurements: 14.25 x 8 x 1.5 inches (36.20 x 20.32 x 3.81cm)
