    Description

    LARGE FOSSIL TURTLE
    Stylemys nebrascensis
    Oligocene, White River Badlands
    South Dakota, USA

This large fossil turtle - actually a fossil land tortoise as it lived a terrestrial rather than an aquatic lifestyle - is a Stylemys nebrascensis of the "high dome" variety. Such specimens have a pronounced shape to the top shell, called the carapace, when the fossils are fully inflated, as is the case with this outstanding piece. It is rather well-preserved with minimal restoration and exhibits a somewhat unusual greenish-gray hue in contrast to the more typical "bland" neutral and earth tone colors of the majority of similar fossils from the Oligocene deposits of the famous White River Badlands. The shell features some minor "scarring," but is in overall good condition. There even appears to be a bone fragment preserved near the skull area. This larger example, measuring over 10 inches (25.4 cm) long, is a standout even when compared to some of the other finest specimens.
    Overall Measurements: 10.5 x 9 inches (26.67 x 22.86 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
