    Fossil Turtle
    Testudo thomsoni
    White River Badlands
    South Dakota, USA

This fossil turtle - or, more precisely, fossil (land) tortoise - is rather large measuring well over 11 inches (28 cm) in length. The carapace (top shell) features rather considerable scutes and a gradual slope. The plastron (bottom shell) has a very pronounced undulation and terminates with a prominent extension of its shell. This fossil is appealing on both sides and is in fine condition. Most of the minor visible repair is confined to the periphery of the shell. Fossil tortoises were common in the Badlands during the Oligocene and are often found in the region although nicer and more complete specimens are not the norm. This example is very attractive with a mottled color palette that gives the generally bleachy material contrast and intrigue. This fossil is noteworthy for both size and quality of preservation, and Testudo is a less common variety.
    Overall Measurements: 11.22 x 7.48 x 2.76 inches (28.50 x 19.00 x 7.00 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
