    Fossil Turtle
    Stylemys nebrascensis
White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA

The majority of what is ever going to be found with any fossil turtle or tortoise is going to be the preserved shells. The top, known as the carapace, and the bottom, known as the plastron, are the main components of fossil Chelonids from the Oligocene of the Badlands. This fine example, quite sizable at 6 inches (15 cm), features excellent preservation of the shell material, which is very well mineralized, and is somewhat colorful with a taupe to near purplish hue; unlike many similar specimens that are bland and primarily white. This land tortoise has only minimal restoration to some edges of the top and bottom shell, and condition can only be considered excellent. While fossil turtles (tortoises) are fairly common fossils from the famous White River Badlands area, examples of this high quality are definitely rare indeed.
    Overall Measurements: 6.4 x 5.0 x 3.3 inches (16.2 x 12.7 x 8.3 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
