    Stylemys nebrascensis
    Lower Oligocene
    White River Badlands
    Outside Interior, South Dakota

This colorful fossil actually belongs to the genus Stylemys (literally meaning "pillar turtle") and is actually a dry land Tortoise from the renowned Badlands region of the United States. First described by paleontologist Dr. Joseph Leidy, this "high dome" representation features an incomparable bluish-purple color which really makes it stand out, especially when compared to the typical coloration of most other Badlands fossils that usually lack the vibrant color exhibited here. The fossil also features superb mineralization of the top and bottom shell. In addition, the Plastron has a concave shape indicating this fabulous specimen was, indeed, a male. This fossil was collected in 1970 from the site in the White River Badlands that was permanently closed to collecting in the mid 1990s. This perfectly sized piece measures 8.5 inches (21.59 cm) long, 6.75 inches (17.15 cm) wide and 3.75 inches (9.53 cm) high. It is a truly outstanding example and certainly noteworthy based on its unique coloration alone. Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Private Texas Collection, Self Collected in 1970

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
