DescriptionFossil Turtle with Skull
White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA
While a fossil turtle, or, more appropriately, a fossil tortoise of average size and condition might not seem special at first glance, this intriguing specimen offers a rather incredible lagniappe: it features a preserved skull. This alone makes this fossil quite a rarity, as a very small percentage of fossil turtles and fossil tortoises are ever found with skulls intact. In most cases, only the top shell (carapace) and bottom shell (plastron) are typically discovered. This specimen, measuring 7.5 inches (19 cm) in length, is a tan and reddish example with a smooth top shell. The tiny skull appears as though peering out of its shell and looking to the right. This unusual fossil has captured for all time this little tortoise taking a last look around its Oligocene environment in this snapshot of prehistoric time dating back an amazing 30 million years.
Overall Measurements: 7.5 x 6 x 2.8 inches (19.1 x 15.5 x 7.0 cm)
Offered at no reserve.
