Description
Fossil Turtle HumerusProtostega gigas
Cretaceous
Taylor Group, Fannin County, Texas, USA
Self-collected by the owner, this outstanding find consists of a fossil turtle bone dating to the Cretaceous rocks of North Texas. The humerus is part of the "flipper" connecting other bones to the "wrist/hand" of the ancient aquatic reptile and, at least from a certain orientation, looks much like a fossil human foot. A wonderful bone in terms of completeness and condition, the fossil is exactly as it was found requiring no restoration. The tan specimen exhibits some layering and textural edging, but is solid. The ball joint is in pristine condition atop the bone with an outstanding rough "porosity" commensurate with the material. A monstrous specimen of Protostega gigas is on display at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and was amazingly discovered by a child on the shores of a local lake. This is a superb self-collected treasure from the big state of Texas.
