    Trionyx sp.
    Eocene, Green River Formation
    Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA

Although turtles are commonly found in the fossil record, the noted Green River Formation - so popular for its plethora of fossil fish and other preserved ancient fauna and flora - does not produce many turtles, so it is quite a find when any good specimen is unearthed there. Trionyx is a rare soft-shell turtle, which still lives today. It dates back to the Jurassic, which is quite a record if you think about it. Rarely found as a complete, articulated specimen, many fossil turtles often consist of only the shells and some bone fragments. In this case, the top shell - known as the carapace - has been fossilized, along with a complete set of impressive ribs that seem to come right out of the shell and make this pristine example of an almost 50 million year old turtle even more intriguing. There is no restoration on the piece and the turtle measures in at 6.5 x 5 inches (16.51 x 12.7 cm). The shell is a bit compressed and slightly cracked in testimony to its authentic nature. As a representation of the vaunted Green River Formation, this is an excellent specimen. The shale rock around the fossil is reinforced with sealed wood.
    Overall Measurements: 11.5 x 10.25 x 0.75 inches (29.21 x 26.04 x 1.91 cm)
