Odenheim, Rheinland-Pflaz, Germany
Only found in the Lower Permian of Germany, the ghastly Paleozoic tetrapod known as Sclerocephalus is quite the prehistoric monster. This classic example of primitive amphibian consists of a fossil salamander on a mottled matrix of yellowish-tans and muted grays. Joining the big, bad brown beast is one large and very nice, dark brown fossil leaf with a high level of detail and numerous branches coming off a centrally positioned stem. The fossil amphibian measures 23.75 inches (60 cm), and the fossil leaf measures 12.25 inches (31 cm). The fossils are ideally positioned on the undulating matrix, balancing the piece perfectly. The texture of the rocky matrix coupled with the impact of the specimens makes the piece artfully fluid.

Provenance: Central Coast Collection
Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000.
