Description
Fossil FrogPelophylax pueyoi
Miocene
Libros, Spain
This fossil specimen represents Pelophylax pueyoi (formerly Rana pueyoi), a large extinct frog species from the Miocene-aged lacustrine sediments of Libros, Spain. Preserved in fine-grained lakebed deposits, the fossil reflects the exceptional fidelity characteristic of this locality, where slow sedimentation and anoxic bottom conditions favored the conservation of delicate vertebrate remains. Pelophylax pueyoi belonged to the family Ranidae, the "true frogs," and is a close relative of modern water frogs. Its large size and well-defined skeletal structure offer valuable insights into the evolutionary history of amphibians in post-Oligocene Europe. Fossils of frogs are relatively rare due to the fragility of their skeletons, and this specimen presents a valuable example of prehistoric amphibian life in a freshwater environment.
