    Fossil Crocodile
    Steneosaurus bollensis
    Lower Jurassic
    Posidonienschiefer Formation
    Holzmaden, Bavaria, Germany

This incredible specimen consists of a rare fossil crocodile in matrix, measuring some 10 feet (3 meters) in length. Out of the famed Holzmaden Lagerst├Ątte in Germany, this fossil offers both size and quality in a unique manner as the piece was prepared some time ago using an "old style" of restoration, resulting in a classic presentation with a rustic nature which highlights the fine preservation of the bony material.

Steneosaurus likely exhibited a pescatarian diet confirmed by the extremely well-preserved teeth in the elongated snout. This superlative example features very minor restoration and crack fill of the vertebral processes as well as the rostrum and teeth which are 100 percent natural. The dorsal osteoderm shows only minor restoration as well, although the articulation of the tail past the last dorsal osteoderm seems to have been "corrected" by replacing some of the original material that had drifted which is a common technique in the preparation of many such specimens. The fossil appears to be some 90 percent original.

As with many such matrix pieces, sections of the fossil, including the skull, were likely removed to allow for the detailed preparation work to be accomplished, before the bones were inlaid back into its matrix which is typical with larger specimens. This piece is outstanding in terms of size and quality with superb aesthetics and a definite museum-quality appearance. This representation of that saltwater crocodilian, which has been equated with Macrospondylus, is presented in a metal channel frame, serving to border its rectangular rocky matrix. Designed for wall hanging in the horizontal position, the fossil could also be installed with a vertical orientation. Expert analyses have confirmed this is a top specimen of the variety.
    Overall Measurements: 135.00 x 56.00 x 3.00 inches (342.90 x 142.24 x 7.62 cm)
