    Description

    Fossil American Alligator Skull
    Alligator mississippienisis
    Pleistocene
    Horse Creek Formation
    Charlotte County, Florida, USA

An incredibly adaptable crocodilian, the modern American alligator classified Alligator mississippienisis has existed for millions of years with very little change even persisting through environmental changes over time. Alligators exhibit polyphyodont dentition whereby the teeth are continuously replaced over the lifetime of the creature. This museum quality specimen from the Horse Creek Formation of Florida lived during the Pleistocene ("Ice Age") and represents an alligator that was some 17 feet (5.2 meters) long. This outstanding specimen boasts a relatively complete skull and lower jaw with dark and conical teeth and some indications of typical restoration. The preserved bone is a light tan coloration, with the black teeth in contrast to the rest of the skull. Presented on a custom wooden base, this is a fossil that represents an animal that has effectively not had to evolve over time regardless of any changes to the environment it inhabited. This specimen is large and ominous consistent with its nature as a predator.
