    Pteranodon longiceps
Late Cretaceous, Smoky Hill Chalk Formation
    Gove County, Kansas, USA

Although not technically a "Dinosaur" as it does not belong to one of the two terrestrial groups, which include all Dinosaurs - Saurischia and Ornithischia, Pternanodon was among the largest of the group of flying reptiles known as Pterosaurs. Although commonly associated with the "Age of Dinosaurs" by the general public, Pterosaurs - like Plesiosaurs, Ichthyosaurs and Mosasaurs - are reptiles that lived alongside the Dinosaurs, but were not of the same classification. Pteranodon had a toothless beak like modern birds, and the fossil evidence indicates that fish made up the majority of its diet. Although adult males had an average wingspan approaching an incredible 20 feet, Pteranodon was probably capable of substantial flapping flight contrary to earlier beliefs that it would only have been able to glide. While most of its flight would have depended on dynamic soaring as is seen with long-winged seabirds, an occasional rapid burst of flapping was probably necessary to maintain continual flight. This outstanding specimen of Pteranodon longiceps, from the iconic Smoky Hill Chalk of Western Kansas, is an excellent example of the creature that was an important part of the Western Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous. This wing measures 65.5 inches (166.37 cm) in length. This piece is ready for hanging with two attached chains for a suspended display.
    Overall Measurements: 71.5 x 27.25 inches (181.61 x 69.215 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
