    Description

    BABY FOSSIL TURTLE
    Stylemys nebrascensis
    Lower Oligocene
    White River Badlands
    Near Crawford, Nebraska

This adorable fossil actually belongs to the genus Stylemys ("pillar turtle") and is actually a baby dry land Tortoise, rather than an aquatic dwelling Turtle, from the Badlands region. This particular specimen was collected in 1968 and is representative of the highly coveted "high dome" variety so sought after by fossil collectors and is virtually complete with minimal restoration. Both the top (carapace) and bottom (plastron) shells are preserved in very good condition. The collecting site is no longer productive making this an even more desirable fossil. Smaller specimens are quite popular likely attributable to the "cute" factor so apparent in this irresistible specimen which measures a diminutive 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) long, 3.75 inches (9.53 cm) wide and 2 inches (5.08 cm) high. This piece exhibits a beautiful creamy tan coloration and is an absolutely pristine fossil specimen. Offered at no reserve.
Provenance: Private Texas Collection, Self Collected in 1968
