Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn Dist., Smith Co., Tennessee, USA

A 'monster' is the short form for this combination specimen from the Elmwood Mine near Carthage, Tennessee. The "star" of the "show" is undoubtedly the monstrous purple cube, 5 inches on edge that dominates the piece. It's deep coloration and the presence of other secondary crystals, some of which are clustered around the base of the big one, furnishes a serious dollop of complexity to the overall mix. The luster of the Fluorite is excellent despite the presence of complex growth figures on the faces. Besides the Fluorite of ample dimensions, there are splashes of granular Barite, looking for all the world, like lumpy mashed turnips, deftly applied along one side of the piece. As if that wasn't enough, brilliantly shining, globular clusters of dark red-brown Sphalerite crystals also share the gray, siliceous matrix with the Fluorite. One of them is over 4 inches in diameter and there is another a bit smaller. The bottom harbors two typical Elmwood Calcites of golden color and twinned habit. One of them has been broken but without turning the piece over, that feature is going to be somewhat hard to see. The other is intact, but the same viewing restrictions still apply. Their presence is more for proof of origin, assuming the combination of other minerals don't take care of that problem. A strange "fin" of purple Fluorite also extends from the bottom of the piece. The condition of the whole group is excellent and the impressive size of the specimen firmly places it into the upper percentiles for Elmwood specimens. There haven't been any of these produced for years now and their desirability just keeps on going up. This is truly a masterpiece.
    Overall Measurements: 10.5 x 9.75 x 6 inches (26.7 x 24.8 x 15.2 cm)
