    Unsigned; and the other, signed Keller and monogrammed at lower left

    PROVENANCE:
    Collection of Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, gift of the artist (1948);
    Private collection.

    These watercolors are a near-pair. They treat the same woodland subject and are framed identically.

    Henry Keller was known as the "Dean of the Cleveland School" owing to the fact that he taught two generations of art students at the Cleveland School of Art, and was also a primary advocate of modernist painting in the Ohio region during the early decades of the 20th century. In these painterly studies of the rocky outcroppings on the Chagrin Falls estate ("Rorycrest") of noted interior designer Louis Rorimer, Keller displayed an admiration for the work of Matisse. Rorimer is remembered today for his stunning art deco interiors (he designed the Silver Grille for Higbees in Cleveland, a suite in the Chrysler Building, and many of the most elegant public spaces in New York's Hotel Pennsylvania). Louis Rorimer was the father of James Rorimer, who became the director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and also served as one of the remarkable "Monuments Men" who recovered masterpieces looted by the Nazis.
