    Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Tom Lea was renowned painter, illustrator, muralist, teacher, writer and commercial artist. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and from 1926-33 worked in Chicago as a mural painter and commercial artist. Back in El Paso by 1936 he painted murals for the Texas Centennial Exposition in the Hall of State followed by several competitions and commissions for New Deal mural projects. In the late 1930s he illustrated J. Frank Dobie's books Apache Gold and Yaqui Silver and The Longhorns. After the War he turned to writing, producing seven books. Lea continued to paint throughout his career and was honored by Governor and Mrs. George W. Bush.
