More Information:
Nikolai Ivanovich Kulbin (1868-1917) was a wealthy doctor and medical military academy professor, author, and artist. He was a member of the Russian Aristocracy and was also regarded as the 'Grandfather of Futurism.'
Living in St. Petersburg, Nikolai Kulbin was a close friend and patron of most of the Russian avant-garde artists, such as Rodchenko, Kluin, the Burliuk brothers, Chagall, Malevich, Popova, as well as others of that pre-revolution period.
Although Kulbin's life was cut short, his family preserved his own works and continued to add to their father's collection even through a difficult historical period. They obtained pieces from family friends and associates resulting in a very significant collection preserved for many years.
We are fortunate here at Heritage to offer at auction a selection of pieces from the Kulbin's family's private collection. Some of these pieces have rarely been seen outside of the family; in particular, Nikolai Kulbin's own work.
