    More Information:

German painter and sculptor who was considered a leading figure in Dadaism and Surrealism.  He began painting after abandoning his study of philosophy at the University of Bonn, Germany but was interrupted by service in WWI.  After the war, Ernst, Jean Arp, and social activist Alfred Grunwald formed the German Dada group.  In 1916 he participated in the "Der Sturm" exhibition in Berlin.  During his career, he collaborated with Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, and also spent time with Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti.  Ernst developed innovative techniques such as frottage, which involves making pencil rubbings of objects, grattage, in which he troweled pigment from the canvas, and decalomania, the pressing of paint between two surfaces. His first American show was held at the Julien Levy Gallery, New York, in 1932. In 1936 Ernst was represented in Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  His work is represented in the collections of many major museums including the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., among others.
