We wish to thank Professor Margaret MacDonald for her gracious assistance in cataloguing this lot. In her opinion, "the butterfly signature in graphite pencil on the tab is not by Whistler: it is probably by one of his assistants, possibly Mortimer Menpes or Walter Sickert, who helped Whistler to print the Venice etchings."
Etching printed in dark brownish black on cream laid paper (watermark showing heraldic lions flanking a shield). A crisp impression with warm plate tone and delicate wiping marks. Trimmed to the plate mark, as issued. Kennedy's second state (of 4) and MacDonald's fourth state (of 8). Paper affixed to the backing board with tape along the top edge verso. A slight crease and pinhole-size notch along the upper edge, right corner.
