    More Information:

Born in Guatemala City to a family of Mayan and Zapotec heritage.  After completing art school, he traveled throughout Europe, settling in Mexico when he returned.  There, he became active in the Mexican mural painting school, painting alongside Diego Rivera.  In 1927, he went to Paris , where he became familiar with the works of Paul Klee and Joan Miro.  Upon his return from Paris, in 1929, he abandoned his figurative style to become one of Mexico's first non-figurative artists.  At this time, he was named director of the gallery of Mexico's National Theater.  His later style grew into a Constructivist style - composed of geometric elements with a Mayan influence.

His work is in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
