FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

This lot contains forty-one prints made after illustrations created by the Tile Club Members; twenty-seven of the pieces are framed whereas fourteen pieces are unframed; some prints are duplicates; image size varies, the smallest measures 2.25 x 1.25 inches. See www.ha.com for additional images.

In 1879, 1880 and 1882, The Tile Club members published illustrations of their various activities and outings as a series of illustrated articles for Century Magazine and Scribner's Monthly. Graham Williford put together a collection of these magazine illustrations--prints that were made after the original drawings (often through wood engraving) and published by the magazines. In 2010, Ken Tomio, who was then curator of the Tyler Museum of Art in Tyler, Texas, mounted a handsome exhibition featuring these printed illustrations together with other choice Tile Club-related items from the Williford Trust, including painted tiles, paintings on canvas, bronze plaques, and original drawings. The exhibit was titled "Studiously Slangy and Bohemian. The Tile Club-Artists of America's Aesthetic Movement." This lot consists of Williford's entire collection of magazine prints (41 total). Twenty-seven of the printed illustrations are archivally matted and professionally framed in identical frames as presented in the Tyler exhibition. The following is a list of the framed works for which titles are known.
