For this richly produced book, Pietro Aquila and Cesare Fantetti etched a suite of 52 prints after the celebrated frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible painted by Raphael's workshop in the Vatican Logge. The suite was dedicated to Queen Christina of Sweden (who had so admired Raphael's Loggia that she had the frescoes copied for the Hermitage in St. Petersburg) and published in 1675 by Giangiacomo de Rossi under the title: Imagines Veteris ac Novi Testamenti a Raphaele Sanctio Vrbinate in Vaticani Palatii Xystis ...The complete set of this rare publication has 52 plates. Throughout the 17th, 18th and part of the 19th century, Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican Logge were more famous than Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.
The Special Collections of the Print Department at the Getty Research Institute holds four plates from this magnificently illustrated 17th-century book (in the Leo Steinberg collection of prints).
Plates are tipped against green sheets. Good condition commensurate with age and having been unbound. This particular set is missing prints 1, 3, 9, 27, 29, 51, and 52.
