This drawing relates to Balashan (1942, private collection), a ceramic sculpture of a horse which Viktor glazed in a gorgeous blue. According to the accounts of Marco Polo (Viktor had a well-thumbed copy in his personal library), the Province of Balashan was known for its rich deposits of lapis lazuli, the source of radiant ultramarine. Balashan was also home to superior horses whose hooves were so hard they did not require shoeing.
