Between the years 1918 and 1920, while Joseph Stella worked on one of his most iconic masterworks Tree of My Life (private collection), he produced many drawings, pastels and silverpoint studies for the hundreds of plants, flowers, and fruits he would include in the work.
The accurate renderings of these botanical studies recall the scientific and illusionistic veracity seen in eighteenth-century folios. The sexual reference in Still Life With Two Peaches is also evident in other studies from this period.
Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
Several pinpoints of minor surface dirt and possible foxing in the negative space; otherwise, no visible condition issues.
