    LITERATURE:
Jan Matulka: The Global Modernist, essay by Whitney Rugg, 2004, cat. no. 30, ill. p. 44.

As Whitney Rugg noted: "Among Matulka's most famous works of this period [1920s] are graphic representations of New York architecture. His cityscapes, rendered in black conte crayon and often worked into prints, employ a dense layout of positive and negative shapes to amplify the stacked verticality of the skyline. Despite their emphasis on the unremitting linearity of the city, Matulka incorporated signed of human life, such as billowing chimneys, billboards, and tugboats, into the compositions" (Jan Matulka: The Global Modernist, 2004, p. 15).
