This calendar illustration commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
As described by Patricia Janis Broder in her monograph Dean Cornwell: Dean of Illustrators (Collector's Press, 2000), the scene "depicts the explorers on the upper Missouri River. Meriwether Lewis is holding the octant, while William Clark, seated, examines the map."
