    Portraitist Alexander "Aleck" Robertson James was the nephew of writer Henry James. Born in Cambridge, MA, he studied painting while living with Abbott Thayer for six years and then continued his training with Frank W. Benson. During the first two years of his marriage (1918-19) he lived and painted in Santa Barbara, CA. James then settled in Dublin, NH where he remained for the rest of his life. He was member of the Century Association, and his works are preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Filoli mansion in Woodside, CA; Addison Gallery of Art; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Fogg Museum at Harvard University.
