Executed in Buffalo, New York, November Light is a stark and brooding depiction of local industrial structures in a cold, working-class town. Painted in 1921 November Light is one of Burchfield's earliest industrial scenes, reflecting the Regionalists' and Social Realists' fascination with portraying a very personal and indigenous America on completely American terms.
In 1921, Burchfield moved to Buffalo, New York, where until 1929, he worked as a wallpaper designer for the M.H. Birge and Sons Wallpaper Company. The artist lived the remainder of his life in Buffalo, devoting himself full-time to painting subjects ranging from sentimental to surreal and even abstract, well into the 1960s.
Sheet appears to be very slightly undulating in the sky; several small creases and tears along the right and bottom sheet edges; creased lower right corner; several pinpoints of possible foxing or surface residue near the upper left edge. This painting is framed using Optium (museum acrylic glazing), which provides clear legibility for examination with both white light and black light. In order to maintain the integrity and airtight sealing of the housing, the painting was not viewed out of the frame for the condition report. Should you wish to have a more extensive report, we recommend firsthand inspection by a professional conservator. For assistance, please contact the department. Framed Dimensions 24.75 X 30.5 Inches
