    Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919) and Richard Guino (French, 1890-1973)
    Base de Petite Vénus à la Pomme, 1914-15
    Original plaster
    9-1/2 x 9-1/4 x 9 inches (24.1 x 23.5 x 22.9 cm)

    The Renoir Collection;
    Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas, September 19, 2013, lot 89121;
    Private collection, Arizona.

    Crippled by rheumatism, by 1912 Pierre-Auguste Renoir was confined to a wheelchair. It was around this time when he took up sculpture in addition to painting and utilized the assistance of Richard Guino to carry out his ideas in this new medium. The present work was intended to accompany Renoir's sculpture Petite Venus à la pomme and depicts in bas-relief the artist's 1913 painting of the Judgment of Paris. The handsome Trojan herdsman Paris was chosen by Zeus to judge who was the fairest of the three goddesses: Hera, Athena or Aphrodite. In the relief, as the three women stand before him and Hermes hovers above, Paris kneels before Venus as he offers her the prize.

    Condition Report*: There appears to be several tiny chips in the plaster, most notably along top and bottom edges and corners. Otherwise, work remains in excellent condition.
