This example is also marked "A.C.", which are the initials of an assistant of Manship's, Angelo Columbo, who is documented to have helped Manship with this particular project. This series of birds was inspired by the Bronx Zoo commission, which was designed in 1926, but not installed until 1934.
Paul Manship was a prominent American sculptor of the 20th century whose work is considered a precursor of Art Deco. He received formal training both in the United States and Rome. While abroad, he traveled extensively throughout Italy and Greece and discovered a deep appreciation for archaic Greek statues and also for Assyrian, Egyptian, and Minoan art . Manship's work, frequently classical in subject matter and influence, was conservative by comparison with the work of his contemporaries. Manship resurrected the most basic principles of archaic and classical sculpture and blended the features of ancient, medieval, and Renaissance occidental sculpture with traces of oriental art, mainly Indian and Japanese. His most popular and rewarding commissions include: Prometheus, 1934, at New York's Rockefeller Center; the gates to New York's Bronx and Central Park zoos; and Group of Bears, 1932, at Central Park's Friedman Playground.
