    LITERATURE:
    D. Goddard and L. Pointer, Harry Jackson, New York, 1981, pp. 123-124, 248-255.

The Marshal, Harry Jackson's tribute to John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in the movie True Grit, grew out of a commission from Time Magazine in 1969. The magazine asked Jackson to create a three-dimensional polychrome model of Wayne for a cover story that would coincide with the release of the movie. When Jackson accepted the commission, he had not yet seen the movie. He chose to portray Wayne in the climactic scene near the movie's end when Marshal Cogburn charges toward a group of heavily armed desperados. Jackson felt that moment not only best summed up the character, but also represented "the timeless strength of the rugged individualist, the one man majority that I believe in with my entire being."

Jackson worked on a very tight deadline to complete his prototype of The Marshal for the magazine, finishing the work in just six days in his New York studio. Casting for the first edition of the bronze was begun in 1969 and the piece quickly became one of Jackson's most popular and sought after sculptures. Subsequently, Jackson cast the piece in three separate editions in varying sizes. Each edition has proven to be successful. Each edition contains both polychrome castings, such as this one, and castings that are finished with a patina only. In each edition, the painted versions are the rarer of the two, with one painted version produced for every two that are not painted. The popularity of this piece has remained steady since the initial edition and it has become one of the most widely disseminated of all of Jackson's bronzes.

The success of The Marshal and the subsequent rise in price for each succeeding edition was a major factor in the development of an authentication system by Jackson's foundry, Wyoming Foundry Studios, in 1978. Beginning with that year, each new casting of a Jackson bronze has been carefully documented in terms of exact measurements and photographs that are kept in the foundry's archives. Each authentic bronze bears the artist's thumbprint and foundry seal.
