    PROVENANCE:
The Cooley Gallery, Old Lyme, Connecticut.

A landscape painter of extraordinary sensitivity and technical gifts, Richard William Hubbard was a much admired figure in the community of American artists associated with the Hudson River School and the National Academy of Design (where he exhibited for more than forty years). As a landscapist working in the middle decades of the 19th century, he was something of a rarity in holding a college degree (from Yale), and working small. Indeed, his penchant and preference for painting comparatively small works such as this separated his efforts quite dramatically from the highly theatrical, expansive efforts of Church and other compatriots working in the Tenth Street Studios. As this sophisticated late scene by Hubbard clearly demonstrates, the painter was capable of imbuing an intimately-scaled landscape with the visual power of something several times its size through his mastery of color and tone, and an unmatched ability in rendering a complex variety of nature's textures. In describing a painting similar to this one of a rushing mountain stream which Hubbard exhibited in 1866 at the Brooklyn Art Association, Henry Tuchman wrote, "The wonderful site selection, rampant attention to tactile detail, broad ranging and subtle palette, as well as the rich control of light and shadow are all Hubbard hallmarks carefully invested in this refined little jewel of a painting." Hubbard's works have become rather scarce, and only occasionally appear at auction.

Condition Report*: Very faint, dry craquelure in lower right quadrant visible under raking light; under UV exam, there appears to be inpainting along all four extreme edges, particularly along bottom edge, several spots in sky (some may be older restorations due to subdued fluorescent quality), several small dots in mountain range near center of composition, and spots of possible minor overpaint/strengthening in rocks and creek bed. Framed Dimensions 19 X 16.25 Inches
