    LITERATURE:
A.N. Bauer, Jan Mijtens (1613/14-1670): Leben und Werk, Petersberg, 2006, cat. no. A20 (Accepted Works), p. 173, illustrated p. 367 (as Portrait of an unknown man in a landscape, present location unknown, 1666).

As A. N. Bauer has noted (see LITERATURE), the sitter's pose in this portrait featuring an arm struck confidently on the hip and the other hanging loosely is one Jan Mijtens used most frequently in his portraits of men, and notably, men of distinction. Portraits adopting a closely comparable pose include Mijtens' likenesses of Christian Huygens (circa 1655-1660; cat. no. A5), Jacob de Witte (1660, cat. A97), Johan de Geer (circa 1665-1670, cat. A18), Binnert Heringa Sirtems van Grovestins (1669-1670, cat. A107), Lord Carnstoun (cat. A11), and Johan van Arnhem (cat. A12).

Condition Report*: Lined canvas. Two circular patches to the reverse, each approximately 1-inch in diameter. Frame abrasion with some areas of associated gilding transfer at extreme edges. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Mild surface dust. A cluster of faint white scuffs in center of figure, just below his collar. Finely patterned craquelure throughout. A few scattered dots and dashes of scuffing and accretion. Not examined out of frame due to size.
Under UV: heavily-applied varnish fluoresces green unevenly, somewhat obscuring the picture surface. Apparent strengthening or retouching applied to the highlights in the background at left. Scattered patches of brushy retouching to the figure's clothing and to the foliage in the background in center and upper right. More finely applied retouching to the figure's proper right wrist and to the pads of the fingers on his proper left hand. Finely applied dots and dashes of retouching to the ends of the frontmost hair strands on his proper left shoulder, to the area just left of his chin, and to his lips, forehead, and irises.
    Framed Dimensions 53.5 X 44 X 2.25 Inches
