    Private collection, Northern California.

Herbert Gute, born in Jeffersonville, New York, in 1907, is best known for his illustrations, watercolors, and genre scenes. Gute served as Yale's staff artist at the Dura-Europos excavation in Syria for three years, and his reproductions of frescos found at the site remain part of the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection. His work is also featured in notable museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, and the Jewish Museum in New York. In addition to teaching drawing and painting at the Yale University School of Fine Art, he served as an art therapy advisor at the Connecticut Mental Hospital. Gute's large-scale painting Haying embodies the art of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project (FAP), which was established in the early '30s, around the same year as Haying. The WPA fostered the production of realistic scenes from everyday American life and promoted themes of farming and small town industrialization, exemplified by the present work. Here, agrarian animals, field labor, and farming tools capture the American genre scene characteristic of the WPA period.

Condition Report*: Canvas loosely supported by/laid down to board. Difficult to read under UV light due to a heavy and uneven varnish layer. Small specks of fluorescing in the foreground may be due to pigment. There are several small touches of paint loss in the sky. Moderate shrinking in the foreground grass and background trees (areas with the olive green pigments) that appear stable (not lifting or flaking). Moderate surface dirt.

    Framed Dimensions 32.25 X 89.25 Inches
