Elmslie William Dallas (British, 1809-1879)
Interior of a monastery in Italy, 1853
Oil on canvas
28 x 36 inches (71.1 x 91.4 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: EW Dallas / 1853
Sotheby's, Belgravia, April 10, 1979, lot 174;
Christopher Wood, London, inv. no. P470 (label verso);
Taggart & Jorgensen, Los Angeles, California (label verso);
Private collection, Los Angeles, California.
Wax lined canvas with dry lining behind it. Fine craquelure throughout commensurate with age has been fully stabilized through the lining. Yellowed varnish. Framers labels from John Walls, Stirling, and Undertaker, Edinburgh on verso.
Under UV examination inpaint to edges is apparent. It is quite difficult to read the presence of any restoration owing to the presence of an old varnish layer. There may be strengthening in areas beneath the varnish. The windows giving a glimpse of sky appear to have been selectively cleaned of the older varnish.
Framed Dimensions 36 X 44 X 3.5 Inches
