NOTE:
As one of Andy Warhol's last works before he passed away in 1987, Moonwalk illustrates the forever iconic moment in history when man first stepped on the moon in 1969. Here, we see the "visor shot" of moonwalker Buzz Aldrin, as photographed by his fellow Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong. This work was to be part of a series entitled "The History of TV," highlighting images of iconic televised moments, which would have included ones of I Love Lucy and the Beatles' famous performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The only work ready to be printed by the time Warhol died was Moonwalk. Since Warhol spent his entire artistic career revitalizing numerous iconic images of American culture, it is fitting for him to have ended with such a powerful moment in history that has largely symbolized the American spirit.
One year later, after the Govinda Gallery of Washington, D.C. featured this image in their exhibition of Warhol's last prints, they were able to use the image by the organizers of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education's gala benefit concert in Houston on March 31, 1988. Buzz Aldrin and his wife Lois attended the event and met Govinda Gallery's owner Chris Murray, who, after finding out that the astronaut in the image was indeed Buzz, worked with the publisher to get a print for Buzz, knowing that's what Warhol would have wanted. We are pleased to present this precious work of art to auction, which has hung in Lois and Buzz Aldrin's home since 1988.
