    Albert Bierstadt (American, 1830-1902)
    Sunset on the Mountain, 1859
    Oil on board
    6-1/2 x 5-3/4 inches (16.5 x 14.6 cm)
    Initialed and dated lower left: AB / 1859
    Signed and inscribed on the reverse: John Frasier Esq / With compliments of / A. Bierstadt.

    Questroyal Fine Art, LLC, New York;
    Private collection, East Coast, acquired from the above.

    This painting possibly depicts a view of Hasli Valley in Switzerland, with Meiringen in the distance and the ruins of Alt-Haldenstien on the left. The composition is similar to Bierstadt's 1858 Valley of Meiringen, Switzerland (6 x 6") and Ruined Castle in the Mountains, The Valley of Meiringen (oil on panel, 5 1/2 x 6 ½", Vose Galleries provenance). In July 1858, Bierstadt and some fellow artists were traveling in Switzerland. They went to Meiringen via the Brunig Pass and in September were still staying at a pension in Meiringen that catered to artists exploring the area.

    We wish to thank Melissa Webster Speidel, President of the Bierstadt Foundation and Director of the Albert Bierstadt Catalogue Raisonné project, for her kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
