Tarkhov was born in Russia and immigrated to Paris in 1899. After a brief enrollment at the Écôle des Beaux-Arts, he became a popular feature at the Salon des Indépendents and the ground-breaking Salon d'Automne. Tarkhov received great acclaim during this period that resulted in financial success, as well as his first one-man show at the famed Parisian gallery of Ambroise Vollard. Tarkhov followed the Impressionist idea that a painter must leave the city to seek out nature to paint, and he left Paris for the countryside near Orsay in 1911. Although this move resulted in estrangement from his clients in Paris, he continued to pursue his inspiration in the field, collaborated with Larianov on a project for Sergei Diaghliev and has been recognised with major retrospectives at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Tarkhov's use of loose brushwork is in keeping with the Impressionistic style. The canvas is dominated by a lone tree, a favorite theme of Tarkhov's, this one set against a robin's egg blue sky. The tree rises from a rolling field mottled in greens, ochres, and lavenders. A village is visible in the distance along the horizon, possibly Orsay.
