Village Scene, 1911
Oil on canvas laid on artist board
    10 x 13-3/4 inches (25.4 x 34.9 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: N Dubovskoy 1911

Dubovskoy was a permanent member of the Wanderers, a Russian art movement active from 1870 through 1923. Also known as the Itinerants, the Wanderers protested the neo-classical restrictions imposed by the Academy through their realistic depictions of everyday genre scenes and landscapes. They broke from the Russian Academy, which dictated that fine art should only depict mythological, historical or biblical themes, and turned their attention to a more modern understanding of what constitutes "art." Formally organized into the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions in 1870, every major Russian artist of this period was associated with the Wanderers at one time or another.

In the late 1890s Dubovskoy's style turned towards Impressionism, and with this his focus centered on the ever-changing qualities of light. This focus on light is evident in his painting Village Scene from 1911, where the brilliant mid-day sun illuminates a pair of cottages in the foreground, while casting strong shadows beneath their eaves. Dubovskoy uses loose brushwork to capture the fleeting moment before the light changes and the moment is lost. A picket fence ornamented with red flowers extends across the left portion of the foreground. In the middle distance, a thick impasto of trees frame the cottages and the downward slope of a hill leads our wandering eye back to the humble cottages. In the distance, mountains are visible through a smoky haze of atmospheric perspective.
