    Description

    MARIE VASSILIEFF (Russian, 1884-1957)
    Icon, 1950
    Mixed media on board
    15 x 11-1/2 inches (38.1 x 29.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Marie Vassilieff / Paris 1950

Vassilieff was a major influence in the art community of Paris, mixing with the great artists of the day - Modigliani, Picasso, and Matisse becoming her friends. She opened an atelier where the works of her friends would be displayed. During World War I, she hosted a cafe where Georges Braque was among the wounded who frequented the place.

Born in Smolensk, Russia, she was at first persuaded to study medicine, but soon followed her instincts and to the Academy at Saint Petersburg and on to Paris and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The influence of her great friends she knew in Paris, where she spent most of her life, is evident here in the current work Icon. Completed late in her life at Paris in 1950, it is perhaps an homage to the work of the great artists she knew so well.
