Lev Feliksovich Lagorio studied at the Imperial Academy at Saint Petersburg under the celebrated M. N. Vorobiov. The influence of the great seascape artist Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky is apparent here in his Heavy Seas in the Black Sea. Like Aivazovsky, he sailed with the Russian fleet and made maritime sketches of the seacoasts, capturing violent storms such as this one. Reminiscent of Aivazovsky's masterful brushwork, Lagorio illuminates the sky and water to create action and emotion in his picture.

Lagorio would later travel to Italy; the magnificent work he did there brought him much acclaim back in Russia, ultimately being rewarded with a professorship at the Academy. He continued his work by painting the coasts of Finland and Norway and was in demand by the Romanovs to document the wartime years, often being sent to the front to complete pictures glorifying the Russian successes. His work is prominently displayed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow today.
