City Corner and Landscape (a pair), circa 1920
Oil on cardboard

City Corner signed and dated lower right in Cyrillic and signed lower left: A. Lakhovsky
Lakhovsky was born in Chernobyl and studied in Odessa, then in 1904 under Repin at the Imperial Academy. He spent two years living in Palestine and returned to Russia in 1910. In 1915 he became the founder of the Jewish Society for the Encouragement of the Arts and raised funds for the Jewish victims of the Great War. He immigrated to Paris in 1926 and enjoyed some success there. In 1935, together with Boris Grigoriev, he was invited with their mutual friend, Alexander Iakovlev, to teach at the Academy of Arts in Boston, but it seems that Lakhovsky died shortly after arriving there.
