    ANDRÉY BELOBORODOFF (Russian, 1884-1984)
South East View of the Pantheon from Piazza della Minerva, 1920
    Watercolor and pencil on paper
    11-1/2 x 9-1/8 inches (29.2 x 23.1 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: A. Belobordoff 1920

He was born in Tula, studied architecture at the Imperial Academy, and worked on the interiors of various important St. Petersburg buildings, including the Anichkov Palace. In 1920, he immigrated to France, and later settled in Italy, where he concentrated on watercolor views of architectural monuments. He exhibited in Paris in 1921 and Copenhagen in 1929, and had numerous private one-man shows in commercial galleries in Paris and Rome. Zinaida Serebriakova painted his portrait in pastel, which is now in the Russian Museum.

The Pulcino della Minerva, designed by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1589-1680), was actually built by his collaborator, Ercole Ferrata. The elephant supports one of eleven Egyptian obelisks in Rome.
