    Description

SIR DAVID YOUNG CAMERON (Scottish 1865-1945)
Seascape With Cliffs (possibly Aberdour, Scotland on the Firth of Forth), circa 1900-1903
    Oil on canvas
    55 x 45 inches (139.7 x 114.3 cm)

Sir David Young Cameron (1865-1945) was a British master of landscape and architectural views, both in paint and in etching. He was trained at the Edinburgh School of Art, became an Associate Engraver at the Royal Academy in London in 1911, where he was elected to the position of Academician in 1920. His landscapes and architectural views, though often devoid of human figures, nonetheless possess a strong human presence. He was tremendously influenced by the somber beauty of his native Scotland, and his prints and paintings have a rich, dark tone that reflects these topographical characteristics. His more famous works include views of British architecture and interior cathedral views, while his gargoyle etchings pay homage to the great French etcher Charles Meryon. Cameron spent his time traveling throughout the countryside in search of romantic subject matter, and he completed five hundred plates between 1892-1909. From 1887-1892 he was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, and an important figure in the etching revival movement. In general both his prints and his paintings feature areas of inky darkness, offset by blistering highlights. After 1903, his paintings brighten up considerably, have a more colorful palette, and focus primarily on the Scottish Highlands.
