Dawson was active in the Royal Navy during World War I and developed a lifelong passion for sailing ships. He is best known for his nautical canvases, and his paintings also functioned as accurate portraits of these working ships. Dawson's experience as a sailor is evident in his meticulous depictions of the interaction of wind and water and ships, and his exacting description of the rigging.

    Condition Report*:

The painting is in very good condition, with an extremely stable the paint surface. The most heavily impastoed areas in the water are fully intact. There are small isolated areas of pinprick sized inpainting to the left of the sails and along the left edge. The frame has every appearance of being the artist's original for it is taped to the stretcher bar which is stamped on top of the brown paper tape with the artist's copyright stamp. The same copyright stamp appears on the dry lining as well. The canvas is original, and appears to have been lined with wax as a stabilizer by the artist himself for the canvas is hard, taut, and there is wax present on the tacking margins. The margins of the canvas are tacked to the stretcher with the original tacks. The painting has not been examined out of the frame.
