Le Sulfateur is a study for Le Sulfatage, one panel of the Grand Décor of Vines cycle commissioned in 1932 by the Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie, Béziers, France, to beautify the Salle des Délibérations on the first floor of the building. For the decoration scheme, Martin created six luminous landscapes in his distinctive Pointillist style depicting the vineyards near his home, Marquayrol, in the picturesque village of Labastide du Vert. Two panels, Bucolique and Idylle, feature the vineyard as a backdrop to pastoral scenes of a mother picnicking with her children and a couple intimately conversing during a work break. The other four paintings depict men and women attending the vineyard at different stages in the season: Binage (hoeing), Sulfatage (spraying vines with sulfate), Cueillette (picking grapes), and Vendanges (harvesting). The model for Le Sulfateur was Henri Martin's son, the painter Jacques Martin-Ferrières.

A contemporary Mercure de France article sums up the favorable response to Martin's Grand Décor of Vines: "Henri Martin is our grand decorator, with his vibrating color and impressionistic vision, as well the sober modeling of figures which he evokes."

Madame Marie-Anne Destrebecq-Martin will include this work in the forthcoming Henri Martin catalogue raisonné. Her photo-certificate accompanies the lot.
