We are grateful to Dr. Robert E. Gerhardt for his generous assistance in cataloguing this lot. On the basis of photographs he endorses the attribution to van Musscher, has included the painting in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné, and proposed the dating of the painting to circa 1680-95. We are also grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie for generously providing the comparative photograph of the pendant portrait which appeared in the Fischer sales catalogue in 1938.
